Emilie Gallier: On Sync and reading dance
He conceived of his first solo Under Cover in 1999. His shows, such as Pour tout l’or du monde créé, created in 2006 for the Festival d’Avignon, are full of irony with regards to the academic world of classical dance, and Dubois doesn’t hesitate to ask the spectator ‘’Who’s the ridiculous one? My body? Or the rules of dance?’’ Funny and moving, Olivier Dubois tours his shows throughout France.
‘Les Temps Tiraillés’ means “time torn” (or pulled) and this premiere of Gourfink’s new work deconstructs conventional concepts of performance and time and emphasises the unique revitalising of dance at every staging. The work is ongoing when the audience arrives and it happens both live on stage and streamed onto screens elsewhere. It also continues Gourfink’s exploration of the complex relationship between music and
choreography, entwining her imperceptible movement with the haunting, spectral score by Austrian composer, Georg Friedrich Haas that engages two violas, a bassoon and one movement of silence within a computer-generated electronic framework.

A journey is often the opportunity to revisit, the moment to take stock of one’s identity or rather one’s identities. Those we have inherited, those we embody in the eyes of others and those we project to ourselves, that we try to emancipate. Whether national, economic, ethnic, minority, cultural, sexual, psychological or affective, a journey brings into question all of these layers of identity, which form new configurations throughout our movements. The different faces we have often result from a negotiation between the legacy of the past and the identity that is being constructed in the present. It is during these movements that the feeling of being a FOREIGNER appears. Our assumed differences and our poor understanding of elsewhere create a place where we can rethink our perceptions. This crossroads of thought is the axis around which I have constructed this choreographic project.
